The predecessor to the M1919 ( or just .30 cal) machine gun, was the M1917, witch was an American made, water cooled machine gun witch proved to be too heavy to be effectively utilized and was too difficult to move. Therefore the M1919 was developed for the American army as a machine gun that could be used more effectively during offensive operations. The M1919 was produced in different forms such as the M1919A4 witch was mounted on a tripod. The M1919A4 was intensively used throughout World War Two by the Allies and later in Korea as well. It was a sturdy weapon, but it had a few flaws. It could easily overheat and had problems laying down continuous fire. Neither did it work well in cold conditions. In defensive actions in the Korea war, the m1917 was just as good an option as the M1919, because of its good accuracy, water cooled barrel and durability in cold. The M1919A6 is a lighter version of the m1919 with a bipod attached in the front, a carrying handle and a wooden stock. It had a new barrel that air cooled a bit quicker than that one on the M1919A4. Its accuracy was yet however not as good as the M1919A4.Caliber: .30 (7,62) Effective range: A4 – 1000 meters, A6 – ca 700-800 meters. |
